Red Paint & Testing Glass Beads
We made a lot of progress tonight, not only getting a considerable way through the first coat of red paint, but also testing a variety of techniques for applying the retroreflective glass beads! We also got to spend some time talking through how we’ll be temporarily installing the letters in a variety of spaces. We figure that there’s still at least a few more weeks of preparation and tests, but we’re really getting excited to get these out into the world. There were a few more letters left over from last week that we needed to finish priming. Karlyn and Rosina using the oil-based primer. We ended up going with just one coat of primer �� a fair base for what we figured would be two coats of red paint. Meanwhile, Michelle started working with cheesecloth to try to control the pouring of the retroreflective glass beads. Cheesecloth and a strainer for applying the beads to wet paint. Michelle also put on coat of red paint on the test cardboard Rosina brought last week

Beading With Glass Seed Beads
Seed beads are tiny and are often used to accessorize different beading projects. They are made from all types of materials and the most widely known material for them is glass. Glass seed beads are used in many different ways. They are used in between large beads in making various beading designs; they are also can be used as spacers after a crimp and before inserting the main bead. Most often, they are used to finish an accessory or use it as an end bead. Other techniques that use seed beads is often stringing them to form a multiple strand beaded accessory and in peyote stitching with the use of five to seven strands to form a bulk necklace or bracelet. You’ll find that these pieces of art are most commonly made from manipulated glass which is wound to form tiny beads. They are heated to a point that the bead makers are able to mold them into small drops of glass. They come in different colors and designs but most of the time, their shape remains from round to rice grain shaped.

Today we’re exploring the history of fire-polished Czech glass beads. We’ve touched on the history of Czech glass beads in the past, which you can read in our previous blog post, but today focuses solely on the brightly brilliant fire-polished ones. These cool glass beads get their name from the hot process they go through to become shiny. Let’s start from the beginning. The cottage industry of glass bead making in the Czech Republic dates back as early as the 1500s when hot, softened glass was pressed into special molds to create unique shapes. These produced the pressed Czech glass beads we know today. Our favorite faceted friends were produced by re-firing each bead to give it that extra sparkle. The process fire-polished beads go through is truly amazing. After the melted glass is poured into molds, each bead is given facets using a grinding wheel.

The Glass Bead Game
by John Michael Greer When I proposed in last week’s Archdruid Report post that readers write science fiction stories about the crisis of industrial society, I wasn’t thinking of Fed chairman Ben Bernanke as a potential author. Still, a speech of his that made the New York Times a few days back suggests that he’s got a sufficiently wild imagination for the job. In that speech, while trying to explain why shoveling trillions of dollars of money into the coffers of the banks that caused the Great Recession hasn’t done anything besides enriching bankers, Bernanke insisted that what’s wrong with the economy is that Americans are irrationally depressed about it. That, he claimed, is what’s keeping consumers from engaging in the binge spending that will get the economy moving again. You have to hand it to the man; it’s an extraordinary leap of fantasy. Out there in the real world, after all, a sixth of the US population is living below the poverty line.
